Integrate reliable evidence from multiple perspectives to inform practice and make reasonable clinical judgments
I believe that a leader should be able to assess a situation from multiple perspectives and decipher that information to make a well-informed and reasonable judgment. It is important to see a problem from multiple perspectives. If a leader only sees one side of an issue, the solution, or possibly another problem, may be sitting on the other side. This is also beneficial to observe where new information or evidence has come from.
Change can be difficult, and many may not understand the importance of a change in practice. A leader needs to be able to explain the benefits of the new evidence based practice and help resolve any resistance. Our hospital is currently undergoing a change. The nursing staff with be in color-coded uniforms (RN = Navy Blue, CNA = Grey, etc.). The change has met a large amount of resistance from the staff. Upon speaking with several of the staff, it was discovered that they were not resisting the change it self, but did not understand why they were being required to change. It has become my role to help explain and educate our staff as to the data and reason management has decided to instigate this change. I have found that just visiting with the employee resolve a many of their reservations.
One class that helped me to understand the importance of reliable evidence, multiple perspectives, and making reasonable clinical judgments would be Community Health. I completed a health assessment of my community and was able to see a problem on the rise. I was able to look at the numbers from Utah County for the past several years and see that the number of unvaccinated children in schools was on the rise. I completed a literature review paper on the importance of vaccinations and how would could improve the number of vaccinated children in the county.
